Roman Castles: do not be misled by the name, we are not in any Scottish castle, but rather a few kilometers to the south Rome! Since the times of Ancient Rome this area was frequented by the patricianfamiliesand emperors built their residences.
This tradition continues today and the Romans of the modern era like refuge here from the chaos of the city and appreciate theabundant vegetation, climate and strategic location.
The area of the Castelli occupies an ancient, fertile volcanic area which has allowed since ancient times a flourishing agriculture.
The former crater is occupied by two lakes, the Lake of Nemi and that of Albano.
The Castelli Romani area is well-known for its cuisine and locally-produced whitewine, known as Frascati.
You can find shelter in one of the local "Fraschette", taverns, only to be found in this areas. There is no finer place to savor the olives, cheeses, roast suckling pig (a savoryand moist boneless roast pork) and a whole array of typical Roman dishes.
The Castles are renowned also for the small towns nestling around volcanic lakes such as Castel Gandolfo where the Pope traditionally makes his summer residence overlooking the lake of Albano, and Nemi, famous for a large production of strawberries.
